progress. But I still felt like an alien.

I gazed out the window as we drove to school

so I wouldn't have to meet all those stares. The

same old boring scenery went past as we whizzed

up the street. I recognized the black iron cemetery

fence and scanned it with my eyes without really

looking.

Then something strange caught my eye. I sat up

straight and plastered my face to the window, trying

to see better.

"Stop the car!" I shrieked to Mrs. Moore. "Stop the car now\"

Mrs. Moore slammed on the brakes. The minivan

squealed to a stop.

We had just passed Uncle Fred's freshly dug

grave. And through the cemetery fence, I had seen

tiny green lights blinking around his tombstone.

Fireflies!

"Back up! Back up!" I ordered.

"What is it, Danny?" Mrs. Moore asked. All the

kids in the van stared at me as if I were crazy.

"There were fireflies!" I cried. "Over Uncle Fred's grave! Didn't you see it? Fireflies—in October]"

Mrs. Moore gave me a worried frown.

"I can prove it to you!" I shouted. "I can show you! Just back the car up!"

The minivan drove a few yards in reverse until I

said, "Stop!" I stared through the cemetery fence.

There was Uncle Fred's grave.

But the fireflies were gone.
